J2 Aircraft Dynamics Introduction

Detailed Design

Complete flight envelopes can be investigated with a single mouse click, enabling areas of interest to be identified instantly for further analysis.

During detailed design, it is necessary to investigate the entire flight envelope. Often, the result is enormous spreadsheets or multiple results files with little or no configuration management. No such problems with the J2 Universal Tool-Kit. The configuration control, built in to the J2 UNIVERSAL FRAMEWORK, enables all analyses to be linked to a design and highlights the analyses that have and haven’t been performed.

The additional information that is acquired during the detailed design phase does not mean the construction of new models. Simply update the existing aircraft model, with more data as it is calculated, and let the J2 Universal Tool-Kit manage all the analyses.

Whole flight envelopes can be analysed with a single mouse click and revisions can be quickly reanalysed to cover all possibilities and keep the results up to date. The data centric approach means that multiple team members can investigate different aspects of the aircraft without duplicating work, all working on the very latest version.

Example

In the example shown, an aircraft model is initially constructed, using J2 BUILDER, for a new Very Light Jet (VLJ) based upon non linear coefficient information found from wind tunnel analyses. This model was then further updated to separate out mass and inertia information for pilot, fuel, and passengers, all of which can be set up from initial conditions without the need for separate models. The whole creation of the model and the importing of the wind tunnel results took just of 1 hour.

A trim envelop was constructed that investigated the whole airspeed and altitude regime, and over 600 potential initial conditions trimmed. The comprehensive trimming algorithms and the ability to specify complete flight envelopes in J2 FREEDOM meant that the whole envelope was assessed in a matter of minutes. From these results it was very easy to use J2 VISUALIZE to establish:

  • The airspeed/altitude regime that the aircraft could achieve

  • The complete trimmed drag curve

  • Elevator deflection to trim

  • Throttle settings/Thrust requirements

Using the same aircraft model, these same flight conditions were assessed for the complete set of mass combinations, and the cg range established and evaluated. J2 FREEDOM automatically calculated the mass, and corresponding cg positions, and inertias for all cases removing the need for multiple configuration files and spreadsheets.

Manoeuvres were then flown with J2 FREEDOM using each of the initial conditions to establish a complete set of stability criteria across the whole envelope.

Further trims were performed to look at climbing and turning flight, one engine out scenarios, and take off and landing manoeuvres and the aircraft behaviour was analysed against the corresponding FAR regulations.
